Wilhelm Backhaus is regarded as a quintessential “objectivist” who does not trivialize Mozart but leaves the inner structure and formal clarity of the pieces intact. His playing is defined by a matter-of-fact, clear, and technically perfect approach that is entirely free of false sentimentality. To mark the 270th anniversary of Mozart’s birth in 2026, Wilhelm Backhaus’s “Backhaus Mozart Recital” will be released for the first time in the SHM-SACD format. This release faithfully reproduces the content and track listing of the original LP, released by Decca under catalog number SXL6301. The recordings of Sonatas No. 10 and No. 12, as well as the Rondo, took place from September through November 1961 at the Victoria Hall in Geneva, Switzerland. Sonatas No. 4 and No. 5 were recorded in November 1966.
To mark this anniversary, Universal Music Japan presents this impressive recording in outstanding sound quality as an SHM-SACD (Single-Layer). This strictly limited edition is based on a new DSD master created in 2026 by Ian Watson Audio Production (UK) from the original master.

Wilhelm Backhaus: piano
This title is an SHM SACD. This format is the further development of the single-layer SACD and uses a particularly light-transparent plastic (Super High Material). It allows a much better readability of the pit-land structures on the surface than is possible with hybrid SACDs. Universal’s SHM SACDs are generally re-digitized to DSD from the albums’ master tapes without any changes. SHM SACDs can be played on any SACD player. Please do not use L’Art du Son or alcohol-based cleaning agents. – Please note: All titles are designed by Universal Music as limited edition collector’s items for the Japanese market.
