Stevie Wonder – The Definitive Collection (UHQCD)

Stevie Wonder is undeniably a musical genius, both within the R&B genre and in pop music in general. He refused to be pigeonholed into any specific style, and his best albums were a vibrant, colorful blend of soul, funk, rock & roll, pop, jazz, reggae, and African elements. Wonder wove them together into a style all his own. His unique voice, his talent for complex arrangements, and his flair for melodies continue to appeal to a wide audience today. “The Definitive Collection” was originally released in 2002 and features 21 of the American music icon’s most popular tracks. With 12 platinum certifications, the compilation ranks among the most successful compilations of all time.

As part of the “High Resolution Masterpiece Series,” Universal Music Japan presents this sonically impressive reissue of this hit compilation. The limited-edition MQA-UHQCD (2019 DSD master, 352.8 kHz/24-bit) was converted from the digital files (44.1 kHz/16-bit) of the original tapes. This exclusive Japan edition comes with an OBI strip.

UHQCD stands for Ultimate High Quality Compact Disc and is a joint development of the Japanese CD replication company Memory-Tech and the Audio Quality CD Company from Hong Kong. Unlike conventional CDs, UHQCDs are not pressed from polycarbonate, but cast from a photopolymer and cured with UV light. Another layer of high-purity polycarbonate is applied to the softer photopolymer for scratch protection. The combination results in significantly reduced reflection of laser light inside the CD and an unmatched precise edge transition between pits and lands of the CD. UHQCDs are 100% compatible with standard CD players. Musically, the result is a sound image strongly reminiscent of analog master tapes.

While Universal Music Japan’s first UHQCD series relied on the DSD data of previous SHM-SACD releases, with increasing popularity, albums that had not previously been released as SHM-SACD are now appearing. Typically, the Universal Archive master tapes are re-converted to DSD for this purpose. UHQCDs are ideal for music lovers who want to get as close as possible to the sound of the recording, but do not own an SACD player.
