Sonny Rollins – Tenor Madness [Mono] (SACD hibrid mono)

One of tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins’ biggest supporters and patrons from the very beginning was Miles Davis. Even before Rollins was well known in music circles, Davis hired him for his recordings, creating a platform for his skills. On Tenor Madness, Rollins had his first opportunity to work as a leader with Miles Davis’ band, which happened to be in New York at the time of the recording – ironically without Miles Davis.

Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones contribute wonderful solos, but the star of the recording remains Rollins, who always commented on the session with his typical pessimism: „Nothing’s happening”. But a lot did happen, especially in the interplay with John Coltrane, who attended the session and engaged in a spontaneous duel with Rollins. A must for any CD collection!

The hybrid mono SACD comes in a mini-LP cover as part of a series of 50 reissues from the legendary Prestige label. There will be 25 mono and 25 stereo recordings. The mastering was done by Kevin Gray at his Cohearent Audio Studios.
