Sonny Rollins – Rollins Plays For Bird [Mono] (SACD hibrid mono)

For ‘Rollins Plays For Bird’, his tribute to alto saxophonist Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins chose a series of standards that he associated with Parker and recorded them within a year of his death. The first track is a 27-minute medley of seven tunes that flow seamlessly into each other. Pianist Wade Legge, in particular, does a marvellous job of blending the different songs together harmoniously. Bassist George Morrow and drummer Max Roach, who is as good as ever, drive the action, while trumpeter Kenny Dorham stays in the background.

The hybrid mono SACD comes in a mini-LP cover as part of a series of 50 reissues from the legendary Prestige label. There will be 25 mono and 25 stereo recordings. The mastering was done by Kevin Gray at his Cohearent Audio Studios.
