“Bad,” the seventh studio album by American musician Michael Jackson, was released in August 1987 on Epic Records and is Jackson’s third and final album produced by Quincy Jones. Coming five years after “Thriller,” the follow-up was released unusually late – its release had been postponed several times. “Bad” reached the top of the album charts in over 20 countries, has sold over 35 million copies to date, and has been certified platinum a total of 11 times! In the United States, seven of the album’s eleven songs were released as singles, while in the United Kingdom and Germany, nine were released as singles.
In 1984, a few months after the “Victory” tour with his brothers, Jackson began recording various demos, a process that kept him busy until the end of 1985. Work on the album began in November 1986, and recording took place between January 5, 1987, and July 9, 1987, at Westlake Audio Studios, where a special wooden stage was built for him, allowing him to dance during the sessions. Jackson wrote about sixty songs for his new album. He recorded about thirty of them, all of which he originally intended to release on a triple-CD set. Quincy Jones, however, advocated for condensing “Bad” into a 10-track LP. Upon the album’s release, an additional eleventh track, “Leave Me Alone,” was released exclusively on the CD version; it was later released as a single and is also included on this MFSL vinyl reissue. The title track, “Bad,” was originally planned as a duet with Prince, but Prince declined, believing the song would be a hit even without him. Other artists who were supposed to be featured on the album included Diana Ross, Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, and Barbra Streisand. However, no collaborations materialized with them either. With “Dirty Diana,” however, Jackson once again recorded a successful rock song, featuring a guitar solo by Steve Stevens. Siedah Garrett (“I Just Can’t Stop Loving You”) and Stevie Wonder (“Just Good Friends”) contributed vocals.
MFSL now presents “Bad” for the first time in audiophile reference quality! Mastered from the original tapes at MoFi Studio in California, this strictly numbered Hybrid SACD (Dual-Layer) offers the best sound quality the album has ever had. This collectible reissue features the iconic cover artwork and sets new standards in terms of three-dimensionality, transparency, and dynamics. No previous version offers the expansive soundstage, pinpoint detail reproduction, pitch-black background, and full dynamic range across the entire frequency spectrum like MoFi’s Hybrid SACD!
We recommend the use of „L’Art du Son” CD/DVD conditioner for even more sonic improvement.
