Mathieu Désy – Vents Contre Airs (CD)

Mathieu Désy is a versatile artist: he is equally at home in classical music as he is in jazz and pop. Désy’s virtuosity and sense of rhythm have graced over fifty albums, which he has recorded both as a bandleader and as a sideman. The artist redefines the double bass by playing bass lines, chords, and melodies simultaneously on a five-string instrument tuned to D, thereby creating an orchestral richness with just a single instrument. As a respected educator, composer, and producer, he brings his full creative energy to his latest project: “Vents Contre Airs” (Crosswinds) is a sophisticated and contemplative jazz album featuring clarinetist Charles Papasoff and percussionist Paul Picard. The album is the sequel to “Contrebasse & Marées” – a minimalist and poetic soundscape built on warm musical currents and the spirit of friendship. “Vents Contre Airs” features six original compositions by Désy, as well as pieces by Papasoff, Manuel de Falla, and an interpretation of a song by Feist.
