Henry Mancini was already a major Hollywood film composer thanks to his successful soundtracks for the crime series Peter Gunn and Breakfast At Tiffany’s, for which he won two Oscars in 1962, when he was commissioned to compose the music for the safari comedy Hatari! starring John Wayne. The original composer was Jerry Goldsmith, but director Howard Hawks fired him because he wanted to use strings in the adventure film and hired Mancini.
He provided him with a collection of African musical instruments that Hawks had acquired during his stay in Tanzania. Thus equipped, Mancini created an original and elegant blend of Western jazz and African exoticism, skilfully incorporating the Tanzanian instruments into the musical background of Hawks’ film.
Thanks to Analogue Productions and remastered from the original analogue tapes by Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound, Mancini’s extraordinary score to Hatari! is now available on SACD, along with the crazy classic Baby Elephant Walk.
We recommend the use of „L’Art du Son” CD/DVD conditioner for even more sonic improvement.
