They were artistic partners, good friends and neighbours: violinist Jascha Heifetz and cellist Gregor Piatigorsky shaped the classical music scene of the 20th century with their performances as soloists and chamber musicians. After the two legendary virtuosos reduced the number of concerts they gave in the early 1960s, they began to play works by some of their favourite composers in private.
These chamber music evenings with friends eventually encouraged them to go public with the so-called „Heifetz-Piatigorsky Concerts” and to present the repertoire they had worked out to larger audiences and subsequently to record it. As well as duos for violin and cello, these included trios, quintets, sextets and octets. For several years the Heifetz-Piatigorsky concerts took place in Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York, often inviting famous colleagues such as William Primrose, Leonard Pennario, Leon Fleischer and Jacob Lateiner to perform larger works.
Now released by Impex Records, this SACD of the 1964 Heifetz-Piatigorsky concerts includes works by Beethoven, Haydn and Rosza, plus a special encore: Joaquin Turina’s wonderful „Trio for Piano, Violin and Cello”, which Heifetz and Piatigorsky recorded with pianist Leonard Pennario in 1967. The original tapes were remixed and mastered by Kevin Gray and Robert Pincus at the Cohearent Audio studios. Included is a high quality booklet with liner notes by Albert Goldberg and Richard D. Freed. A definite recommendation for any music lover!
We recommend the use of „L’Art du Son” CD/DVD conditioner for even more sonic improvement.
