The critic Leonard Feather coined the phrase that Hank Mobley was the „middleweight champion of the tenor saxophone”. His style was less aggressive than that of John Coltrane or Sonny Rollins, but not as gentle and cool as that of Stan Getz or Lester Young. Mobley introduced hard bop to jazz – music between cultivated sophistication and deep sensitivity, complexity and lightness, whose free structure allows for extended improvisation.
In 1956 Hank Mobley released ‘Mobley’s Message’ on the Prestige label. Supported by Donald Byrd (trumpet), Barry Harris (piano), Jackie McLean (alto sax), Art Tayler (drums) and Doug Watkins (bass), he recorded six tracks in various constellations. For Charlie Parker’s ‘Au Privave’, the band appears only as a sextet.
The hybrid mono SACD will be released in a mini-LP cover as part of a series of 50 reissues by the legendary Prestige label. The plan is to release 25 mono and 25 stereo recordings. The new mastering was done by Kevin Gray at his Cohearent Audio Studios.
We recommend the use of „L’Art du Son” CD/DVD conditioner for even more sonic improvement.
