Ferenc Fricsay’s artistic career is inextricably linked to the revival of Berlin’s musical life during the turbulent postwar years, that is, between the Soviet blockade and the construction of the Berlin Wall. Born in Budapest in 1914, he served as General Music Director of the Städtische Oper after 1949, while simultaneously shaping the RIAS Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1947, into one of Europe’s leading orchestras. At the same time, he was one of the most important promoters of the gramophone record and produced numerous outstanding opera and orchestral recordings for Deutsche Grammophon, including the first LP produced in Germany (1949) and the first stereo recording (1957). A few weeks after the Berlin Wall was built, in September 1961, he conducted the premiere performance at the newly built Deutsche Oper in Berlin, before his serious illness forced him to retire permanently. Fricsay died in Basel in February 1963 at the age of only 48, and today, despite his extensive musical legacy, he has fallen somewhat into obscurity. (Attila Csampai, July 29, 2023)
The collaboration between conductor Ferenc Fricsay and the Berlin Philharmonic is regarded, particularly in the works of Ludwig van Beethoven, as a highlight of 20th-century recording history. Their recordings from the late 1950s and early 1960s for Deutsche Grammophon (DGG) are characterized by a special transparency and emotional depth. (RONDO – Das Klassik & Jazz Magazin)
