“One evening, a group of musicians played two sets at Bauer Studios in Ludwigsburg in front of a small but enthusiastic audience. This album features the first set from that evening. The young singer and guitarist Ella Burkhardt teamed up with the equally young guitarist and singer Kjell Kitzing and the trumpeter Ingolf Burkhardt, who also happens to be Ella’s father—a family project! Fearlessly, they stepped before the audience, knowing full well that everything would be recorded and remain unaltered. A unique and exciting way of recording that few artists dare to attempt, but these three brave souls dared – and how they pulled it off! Whether Ella and her fellow musicians are interpreting Joni Mitchell’s “A Case Of You,” Bill Evans’ “Monica’s Waltz” (with Swedish lyrics by Beppe Wolgers for the legendary singer Monica Zetterlund), Ella’s own song “Plastic Church,” in which she sings and plays guitar, Gordon Lightfoot’s “In The Early Morning Rain”, or “You Are Here,” written by Ella and Ingolf – they do it with style. Her singing is just as flawless as her guitar playing, and this album impressively showcases Ella’s potential alongside Kjell and Ingolf. Ella – you are the music, and the music is you.” (Nils Landgren)
Ella Burkhardt, the German-Swedish singer from Schleswig-Holstein, began her career with a bang when she performed with Nils Landgren at JazzBaltica 2017. Even as a schoolgirl, she amazed and thrilled audiences, whether at “Jugend Jazzt” or when she appeared on stage with her father Ingolf Burkhardt, trumpeter with the NDR Big Band. She began her musical journey at the age of six on the piano, followed by her first singing lessons at 13. The promising artist studied jazz singing in Maastricht and has already sung in a wide variety of groups, whether with a big band or alone with her guitar. In 2023, Ella Burkhardt was awarded the prestigious JazzBaltica sponsorship award in Timmendorfer Strand.
As part of “Analogtage 2024,” Norbert Lehmann – a musician, sound engineer, and founder of the concert series “Analogtage” held at the world-famous Bauer Studios in Ludwigsburg, Germany, where spectacular concerts are live-streamed and recorded simultaneously – invited Ella to perform with a top-notch band. The spectacular first concert of the evening, performed by a small ensemble, was recorded live in front of an audience at the legendary Bauer Studios in Ludwigsburg using the demanding and technically challenging direct-to-2-track method and is now being released by Lehmann Audio in the form of a sonically outstanding 180-gram vinyl (45 RPM). Daniel Krieger (Schallplatten Schneid Technik, Frankfurt) is responsible for the Half-Speed Mastering.
Bauer Studios is the oldest privately owned studio in Germany. Stereo recordings have been made there since 1949 – at a time when the entire German broadcasting landscape was still broadcasting in mono. Over the past few decades, the Ludwigsburg-based studio has welcomed a steady stream of global jazz stars. The place has an almost magical effect on musicians.
