If this title makes you think of the book by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, you wouldn’t be far wrong. The book is set in the jungles of South America, where explorers discover a prehistoric world complete with dinosaurs. Both the book and later film adaptations were based on the jungle and plateau of Mount Roraima in the Canaima National Park in Venezuela. This work was created with the sounds of the jungle and the legends of the Indians who live there.
Michael Stearns weaves a dense web of sounds from nature, song, Indian legends and new age sounds. He was inspired by a trip of several weeks into the jungle, which included the arduous ascent of Mount Roraima and a flight in a 1941 DC-3, the only „modern” connection allowing travel to remote areas. The music captures both the vastness of the Sabena plain and the power of the world’s highest waterfall, at 982 metres, in the National Park. In keeping with Arthur Conan Doyle’s book, real footage of a volcanic eruption is also woven into the music.
FIM’s re-mastering really takes you into another world, and listeners sitting perfectly in the stereo triangle will hear the music moving around them. Getting the volcanic eruption right was a particular challenge for FIM. The original idea of leaving the 20Hz tones at real volume was soon discarded, as there were hardly any listeners who could reproduce such a thing, and even Winston MA’s wife thought the first playback attempts were a real earthquake. It was decided to shift the frequency to the 40 to 110 Hertz range to give people in normal homes a chance to enjoy the experience.
The album „The Lost World” is one of the absolute delicacies in the FIM programme and is likely to become one of THE demo records par excellence.
We recommend the use of „L’Art du Son” CD/DVD conditioner for even more sonic improvement.
