The David Hazeltine Trio – The Jobim Songbook In New York [One Step] (Vinil 180g, LP)

As part of the celebrations marking its 40th anniversary, Chesky Records is releasing a reissue of David Hazeltine’s “The Jobim Songbook In New York”! This masterful recording, originally released in 2006 and long out of print for collectors, showcases how refreshingly the celebrated pianist’s trio – featuring bassist Nat Reeves and drummer Joe Farnsworth – reinterprets eleven classics by bossa nova pioneer Antonio Carlos Jobim. “‘The Jobim Songbook in New York’ is not for die-hard bossa nova fans. Rather, it is a jazz CD created with an open mind. Hazeltine dares to discover new elements in songs that are firmly anchored in the fabric of pop music.” (Ernest Barteldes, AllAboutJazz, July 15, 2007)

Jobim’s timeless melodies have been recorded countless times, but no artist other than Hazeltine has yet dared to turn the tables and pose a fascinating musical question: What if Jobim had been born and raised in New York and had written his music specifically for a hard-swinging jazz trio from Manhattan? Instead of relying on typical bossa nova rhythms, this world-class trio interprets Jobim’s compositions with taste, finesse, and creative boldness. Among the album’s highlights are the surprisingly bop-infused interpretation of “Meditation” and a complex version of “Once I Loved,” reminiscent of Ahmad Jamal’s sophisticated groove. Above all, the legendary “The Girl From Ipanema” is brilliantly transformed into a rousing swing number. Bolstered by the almost telepathic chemistry between Reeves and Farnsworth, Hazeltine delivers a career highlight that remains unmatched to this day. Recorded with Chesky’s signature commitment to a flawless, acoustic live sound, this trio performance feels intimate and utterly alive.

Evosound presents “The Jobim Songbook In New York” as part of the Chesky Original Masters Series – pressed on 180-gram vinyl using the sonically superior One-Step process and cut at 33 RPM. We recommend the use of „L’Art du Son” LP cleaner to wet wash your vinyl. Even new records of high quality production will benefit from this.
