December 14, 1959 – a historic date: On this day, “Time Out” was released on Columbia Records, recorded by Dave Brubeck (piano) in a quartet lineup – with Paul Desmond (alto saxophone), Eugene Wright (bass), and Joe Morello (drums) – between May 25 and August 18, 1959, at Columbia’s 30th Street Studios in New York. At first, Columbia Records showed little enthusiasm for the results of the recording sessions. This was also reflected in the reviews by critics of the time, who claimed that “Time Out” was a betrayal of jazz. Of course, this did nothing to diminish the album’s success: in 1961, the track “Take Five,” composed by Paul Desmond, managed to climb to the top of the pop charts. The song, played in 5/4 time, was the first jazz record to sell more than a million copies and remains the most successful jazz single of all time. The album became a definitive milestone for the genre – even though Brubeck and his band had ventured away from the classic 3/4 and 4/4 time signatures and actively experimented with new sounds. To put it bluntly: The album is really good, even though so many people like it! In 2011, it was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America for two million copies sold.
AudioNautes Recordings pays tribute to “Time Out” with a sonically outstanding, limited-edition, numbered double LP box, available in a run of 1,500 copies. The elaborately designed box set contains a four-page booklet and both LPs – pressed on 180-gram vinyl by Optimal Media – using the superior One-Step process and cut at 45 RPM. The sonically impressive remastering is based on an old safety copy of the original stereo master tape. To ensure the best possible sound quality, Fabio Camorani – the man behind AudioNautes – decided to change the original track order to allow for two or, at most, three tracks per side. As a result, LP 2 is a single-sided vinyl record.
