The Butterfield Blues Band – In My Own Dream (Vinil 180g, LP)

Release: November 2026

„In My Own Dream” is the fourth album by the American blues rock band Paul Butterfield Blues Band. It was released in 1968 and continued along the lines of its predecessor „The Resurrection Of Pigboy Crabshaw” (Elektra EKS-74015) in that it gave even more prominence to a soul sound, fortified by a top-notch wind section (with a young David Sanborn); it was, however, not so well-received by the critics nor the public as its forerunner.

Some asserted that Butterfield had gone too far in the direction of jazz and ousted his young public, since jazz belonged to the Establishment. Although the Butterfield Band incorporated more jazz elements in their live performances, „In My Own Dream” is no jazz album. It is also not a blues, rock, soul, gospel or R & B album, but rather more an amalgamation of all these styles. The greater problem for the criticizers of this LP seems to have been that the album demands the listeners to repress their automatic need to categorize and just let the music speak for itself. One can conclude that we have here a more sophisticated collection of numbers than were to be found on earlier albums; the songs are put together methodically and stand out for their bold wind arrangements, aesthetic saxophone solos, taut back beats, visceral song arrangements as well as impressive harp and guitar solos. Butterfield’s version of „Just To Be With You” has gone down in history. But what is more – all the numbers, especially Butterfield’s autobiographic and surprisingly acoustic guitar-driven title song is not outdated – even after almost 60 years.
