This recording, featuring Sir George Solti, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the Chicago Symphony Chorus under the direction of Margaret Hillis, was originally recorded in May 1980 at the Medina Temple in Chicago. The performances by the outstanding singers Isobel Buchanan (soprano) and Mira Zakai (alto) are unsurpassed. The original tapes were meticulously remastered at the Esoteric Mastering Center by producer Jo Yoshida, executive producer Motoaki Ohmachi (president and one of the founders of the Esoteric Company), and mastering engineer Masaya Tohno, making this absolute milestone of the late Romantic period – released as part of the “Esoteric Classical Masterpiece Collection” – a true collector’s item!
The Hungarian-British conductor Georg Solti became music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1969 – a position he held for 22 years. He conducted numerous recordings and high-profile international tours with the orchestra. In 1991, Solti stepped down from the position and became the orchestra’s Conductor Emeritus, a title he held until his death. During his tenure as the eighth music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, he also served as music director of the Orchestre de Paris from 1972 to 1975 and as chief conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra from 1979 to 1983.
