Latin albums were extremely popular in the 1950s and early 1960s, and so it came to pass that singers like Dean Martin, Lena Horne, and Peggy Lee suddenly embraced this new exotic sound with “castanets and bongo drums.” Julie London also jumped on this bandwagon: Like Peggy Lee, on “Latin In A Satin Mood” she combined laid-back Latin standards with understated, jazz-infused vocals and a cool demeanor with icy sex appeal. Julie London was the movie starlet who became a singer, and whose dark voice captivated an entire generation. Just three years earlier, the then-15-year-old – born Julie Peck, the daughter of a singing and dancing duo from the vaudeville era – had sung on her parents’ radio show. When she began working in film in the 1940s, she changed her name to London. Over the course of her acclaimed career as an actress and musician, she recorded more than 30 albums. The artist, who was once married to “Dragnet” producer Jack Webb, had a hit in the 1950s with the single “Cry Me A River.” The single was released in 1955 and sold over three million copies!
