Not only was Johnny Coles small in stature, he was never destined to become a real star. Although he toured for years as a sideman with jazz greats, he was never destined for a real breakthrough as a leader, and even this album under his name can be attributed equally to arranger and pianist Duke Pearson. Nevertheless, it is a fantastic album on which little Johnny can show that Miles Davis was not the measure of all things when it came to playing with soul.
Johnny Cole is joined on trumpet by Leo Wright on alto sax and flute, Joe Henderson on tenor sax, Duke Pearson on piano, Bob Crenshaw on bass and Walter Perkins and Pete LaRoca on drums. The result is an exciting mix of obscure material and catchy tunes.
This title is part of a series of XRCD24 reissues from the Blue Note catalogue and has been remastered from the analogue stereo tapes at Oceanway Studios in Hollywood by Alan Yoshida, one of the inventors of the XRCD process. The sonic qualities of the newly released AudioWave XRCDs go far beyond previous digitisations and in some cases sound considerably better than the original LPs. The AudioWave XRCDs come with a very lavish hardback booklet with excellent photos and commentary on the recording.
We recommend the use of „L’Art du Son” CD/DVD conditioner for even more sonic improvement.
