João Donato – A Bad Donato (SHM-SACD single layer)

On the album “A Bad Donato”, recorded in 1970 and released that same year on Blue Tumb Records, Brazilian pianist João Donato left his bossa nova roots behind to record an eclectic mix of funk, fusion, and psychedelic rock and pop with the crème de la crème of Los Angeles-based session musicians. Featuring Eumir Deodato – who also arranged the songs – Bud Shank, Oscar Castro Neves, Dom Um Romão, and Paulinho Magalhães, as well as Stan Kenton’s orchestra, the result was a landmark album that Brazil’s Rolling Stone magazine included among the “100 Best Albums of Brazilian Music” in 2007.

“In fact, the album fit perfectly into the nascent jazz-rock era and should have made a significant impact alongside the works released at the same time by Miles Davis, Tony Williams, and Larry Coryell. It took decades, however, for the crate diggers of the rare-groove subculture to take notice of the music. In his later years, Donato enjoyed a reputation as an elder statesman of bossa nova and Brazilian jazz and, especially in the final years of his life (he died in mid-July 2023), was able to release album after album of the most diverse styles. “But he was never heard again as funky and wild as he was on ‘A Bad Donato.’” (Detlef Diederichsen, TAZ, Nov. 18, 2023)

To mark the 70th anniversary of Verve Records, Universal Music Japan is releasing a new series presenting the legendary catalog of the renowned label in impressively mastered, high-resolution sound quality. The limited edition Japan SHM-SACD (Single Layer) comes in a mini LP cardboard sleeve with OBI stripe, making “A Bad Donato” an absolutely collectible disc!

This title is an SHM SACD. This format is the further development of the single-layer SACD and uses a particularly light-transparent plastic (Super High Material). It allows a much better readability of the pit-land structures on the surface than is possible with hybrid SACDs. Universal’s SHM SACDs are generally re-digitized to DSD from the albums’ master tapes without any changes. SHM SACDs can be played on any SACD player. Please do not use L’Art du Son or alcohol-based cleaning agents. – Please note: All titles are designed by Universal Music as limited edition collector’s items for the Japanese market.
