Pianist Hyperion Knight was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. At the age of 14, he made his recital debut in San Rafael, California, playing Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto. Knight received his Bachelor of Music from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and his Master of Arts from the Cleveland Institute of Music. He completed his doctorate at the age of 22 with a dissertation on Beethoven’s Waldstein Sonata. In 1983 he was appointed principal pianist of the Erie Philharmonic Orchestra.
A custom-built concert grand piano was used for this recording. This unique instrument, built by Sheldon Smith in his workshop in Berkeley, California, where the recording took place, has a powerful low register that provides a solid foundation for the left hand. The upper registers are slightly less muted than usual. Schoeps spherical condenser microphones were used in conjunction with vacuum tube amplifiers to produce a harmonious, full and precise sound.
The remastering for Analogue Productions was done by Kevin Gray.

We recommend the use of „L’Art du Son” CD/DVD conditioner for even more sonic improvement.
