Horace Parlan – Speakin’ my Piece (XRCD24)

Horace Parlan managed to develop his own style on the piano despite his polio disability. He used his partially paralysed right hand to play a stirring rhythm and his healthy left hand to set the accents. His real breakthrough came when Charles Mingus realised that although he could not play everything, he could play some things fantastically. On „Speakin’ my Piece” Parlan recorded a wonderfully melodic album with a horn section for the first time.

This album also featured Parlan’s most famous composition, „Wadin”, which clearly contains elements of blues, swing and soul. The band consisted of Horace Parlan on piano, George Tucker on bass, Al Harwood on drums, Stanley Turrentine on tenor sax and his brother Tommy Turrentine on trumpet.

This track is part of a series of XRCD24 reissues from the Blue Note catalogue and was remastered from the analogue stereo tapes at Oceanway Studios in Hollywood by Alan Yoshida, one of the inventors of the XRCD process. The sonic qualities of the XRCDs, newly released under the Audio Wave label, go far beyond previous digitisations and in some cases sound considerably better than the original LPs.
