Herbert von Karajan & Berliner Philharmoniker – Richard Wagner: Das Rheingold (SHM-SACD single layer dublu)

“Das Rheingold” from Herbert von Karajan’s Wagner Ring Cycle with the Berlin Philharmonic, together with the other parts of this extraordinary tetralogy, marks the 150th anniversary of the cycle’s premiere. For his monumental Ring cycle, Karajan assembled a world-class ensemble of singers who possessed a neutral vocal timbre and offered a clear articulation of the text. His Berlin Philharmonic was more than capable of rising to this challenge. Karajan’s Ring cycle stands out from other recordings due to its almost otherworldly approach, focused on beauty, lyricism, and structure.

To mark this anniversary, Universal Music Japan presents this impressive recording in outstanding sound quality. This strictly limited release is based on a newly created 2026 DSD master and is the first single-layer SHM-SACD edition. More than half a century later, the performance by Herbert von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic, together with an outstanding cast of singers, is still hailed as one of the greatest interpretations of all time.

This title is an SHM SACD. This format is the further development of the single-layer SACD and uses a particularly light-transparent plastic (Super High Material). It allows a much better readability of the pit-land structures on the surface than is possible with hybrid SACDs. Universal’s SHM SACDs are generally re-digitized to DSD from the albums’ master tapes without any changes. SHM SACDs can be played on any SACD player. Please do not use L’Art du Son or alcohol-based cleaning agents. – Please note: All titles are designed by Universal Music as limited edition collector’s items for the Japanese market.
