In the 1960s, Herbert von Karajan conducted far more than just Beethoven and Brahms. With Debussy’s symphonic poems “La Mer” and “Prélude À L’Après-Midi D’Un Faune,” the master conductor interprets two centerpieces from the French impressionist’s oeuvre on this recording. The Berlin Philharmonic ensemble approaches the essence of each individual work in its own incomparable way.
The Penguin Guide wrote about this recording in 1994: “After three decades, Karajan’s recording of ”La Mer“ still stands in a league of its own, and his interpretation of ”Prélude À L’Après-Midi D’Un Faune“ is just as unforgettable – one of his greatest recordings.”
For this anniversary SHM SACD – marking the 150th birthday of Maurice Ravel – the DSD master was created exclusively from the original tapes (2024) at Emil Berliner Studios.

This title is an SHM SACD. This format is the further development of the single-layer SACD and uses a particularly light-transparent plastic (Super High Material). It allows a much better readability of the pit-land structures on the surface than is possible with hybrid SACDs. Universal’s SHM SACDs are generally re-digitized to DSD from the albums’ master tapes without any changes. SHM SACDs can be played on any SACD player. Please do not use L’Art du Son or alcohol-based cleaning agents. – Please note: All titles are designed by Universal Music as limited edition collector’s items for the Japanese market.
