Georgius “George” Trantalidis is a leading figure in Greek jazz, best known for his work with the band Sphinx and his numerous contributions to the development of the genre in Greece. After a hiatus of nearly 20 years, Trantalidis returned to the jazz spotlight with “Looking Back,” an album acclaimed by the music press. “Global Vision,” which was recorded in 2010 in Athens, New York, and Boston and released in 2011 as a private initiative on Seven Island Records (CD, 300 copies), is now available for the first time on vinyl and demonstrates the high regard in which the composer and multi-instrumentalist – who wrote all the tracks on “Global Vision” himself – is held by his fellow musicians: The guest list reads like a “Who’s Who” of the international jazz and blues scene – including Grammy Award winner Fred Lipsius (Blood, Sweat & Tears, Thelonious Monk, Cannonball Adderley, Paul Simon, Al Cooper), Barry Finnerty (Miles Davis, Brecker Brothers, Crusaders), Alex Foster (Jaco Pastorius, McCoy Tyner, Jack DeJonnette, Gil Evans, Mingus Dynasty), Ron McClure (Charles Lloyd, Keith Jarrett, Jack DeJonnette, Buddy Rich, Wes Montgomery, Wynton Kelly Trio, Quest), and many more, who lend an unmistakable touch to the fusion big band sound enriched with traditional Greek musical elements. The double LP (33 RPM) is pressed on high-quality 180-gram vinyl and comes in a high-quality gatefold sleeve.
More than 15 years ago, “jazz from Greece” was still flying under the radar of experts. That is no longer the case: the Greek jazz scene is growing, thriving and truly blossoming. Just think of the great releases by Petros Klampanis or Melina Plaxinos. The Hellenic Jazz Society record label began operations in June 2024 with the aim of producing high-fidelity albums from the local jazz scene. The steady rise of the Greek jazz scene has prompted HJS to promote talented Greek musicians at home and abroad. All of the Hellenic Jazz Society’s albums are recorded to high-quality standards and pressed by Takt Direct in Austria.
