Descriere

“Live At The Kurhaus 1969” is far more than just a simple live album – it captures the unique chemistry of a quartet that had remained virtually unchanged since its founding in 1951. Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond had made their debut together at the “Black Hawk” nightclub in San Francisco. Sixteen years later, on October 24, 1967, they were in perfect harmony more than ever. They tirelessly broke down racial barriers, even during the darkest days of McCarthyism, and made jazz accessible to everyone by reinterpreting ballads, popular songs, and great classical themes. Above all, however, on that evening at the Kurhaus in Scheveningen, they employed a seemingly endless variety of complex time signatures that cemented their legendary status. Brubeck’s rich harmonic sensibility, Eugene Wright’s groove, Joe Morello’s drive, and Paul Desmond’s warm, delicate tone blended into a dialogue of rare intensity. From “Three To Get Ready” to the Latin American sounds of “La Paloma Azul” and “Cielito Lindo,” all the way to the indispensable “Take Five,” the Dave Brubeck Quartet offered far more than just a jazz concert that evening: they became true ambassadors of American music!

Frédéric D’Oria-Nicolas, the musical treasure hunter behind The Lost Recordings, describes the path the label had to take to make this release possible as follows: “We discovered this previously unreleased recording during our second trip to the Dutch archives. This ensemble is a miracle of alchemy: the great culture and the structural, harmonic and rhythmic innovations of Dave Brubeck taught by Darius Milhaud, the pulsation of Joe Morello, the groove of Eugene Wright, and Paul Desmond’s irresistible, suave and delicate tone could only constitute a quartet which would achieve a worldwide success. This recording is a true masterpiece. Each title is a gem, with exquisite and refined style served by an exceptional sound quality that allows each color to be appreciated at its true value. An unforgettable moment.”

“The Lost Recordings” is celebrated worldwide for preserving priceless musical heritage and for the unmatched quality of its Phoenix-Mastering™ restorations, and it releases this extraordinary concert, which was recorded during one of the quartet’s very last European tours and showcases the four gifted musicians at the height of their 16-year musical collaboration, just a few weeks before their final concerts together, in absolute reference quality: The “Sapphire Edition” is released as a double LP (33 RPM) on 200-gram transparent Ultimate Record® vinyl. The hand-numbered edition is strictly limited to 4,000 copies, and the luxurious box set includes a 16-bit download card for the album. Sound wizard Kevin Gray himself is responsible for the lacquer cuts.
