„All Or Nothing At All” collects twelve of the best songs Billie Holiday released on the Verve label in the mid-1950s. Her collaboration with producer Norman Granz ended in January 1957. On this collection, first released in 1955, Holiday shows once again why she was able to get so close to her listeners. She subtly allows emotions to flow in and out of her interpretations, both on individual tracks and throughout the set. In this way she reflects the complex emotional states to which we are all constantly subjected. For Nat Hentoff, who wrote the liner notes, this is why you can listen to Holiday’s albums over and over again and still discover new meanings. She is accompanied by a stellar band including Harry ‘Sweets’ Eddison, Barney Kessel, Ben Webster and Jimmy Rowles. A jewel in mono!
This recording is part of a series of 25 Verve reissues on Analogue Productions. The original Analogue tapes are re-edited by senior mastering engineer George Marino at Sterling Sound in New York. Many of the tapes have been sent to other labels as copies for decades, but Sterling Sound works so closely with Universal Music, the owners of the Verve label, that they occasionally make an exception. The hybrid SACDs sound excellent, clearly eclipsing earlier digitisations.
We recommend the use of „L’Art du Son” CD/DVD conditioner for even more sonic improvement.
