Along with ‘Porgy & Bess’, ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ and ‘An American in Paris’ are among the most famous works by American composer and pianist George Gershwin. Written for bandleader Paul Whiteman, ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ combines elements of classical music with jazz influences and was composed in just five weeks. The idea for the composition, a kind of kaleidoscope of American musical styles, came to Gershwin on a train journey to Boston. Whiteman’s arranger completed the orchestration eight days before the premiere, which Whiteman performed with his Palais Royal Orchestra at New York’s Aeolian Hall.
An American In Paris’ recounts the impressions of an American walking through the streets of Paris, accompanied by a symphony orchestra – plus celesta, saxophone and car horns. Arthur Fiedler recorded both works with the Boston Pops for RCA Victor. An outstanding recording featuring a major conductor, a major orchestra and the great pianist Earl Wild.
This hybrid multi-channel SACD is not to be confused with the earlier Bertelsmann Music Group SACD release. The recordings in the new RCA series have been remastered by Ryan Smith; the stereo mix has been created from the original 3-channel recordings.
We recommend the use of „L’Art du Son” CD/DVD conditioner for even more sonic improvement.
