For many connoisseurs, the perfect rhythm section: without Red Garland (piano), Paul Chambers (bass) and Philly Joe Jones (drums), “Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section” would not have become the magical album that the alto saxophone virtuoso created. The debut album of the Contemporary Records label from 1957 underscores the sheer incredible synergy of the quartet: especially on classics such as “You’d Be So Nice To Come Home To” and “Waltz Me Blues,” the four simply sound magnificent! For Pepper, known for his emotionally charged performances, “Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section” was a milestone in his career. According to him, the album was recorded under enormous pressure, as he only found out about the opportunity to use the studio on the morning of January 19, 1957, and had never met the other musicians, whom he greatly admired. His instrument was also not in particularly good condition. Nevertheless, the session produced results that Becky Byrkit (AllMusic) described as “a diamond in jazz history.” Brian Morton and Richard Cook, who reviewed the album for the tenth edition of The Penguin Jazz Guide, described it as “a poetic, fiery date on which all four men rose above themselves to create a masterpiece together.”

The original tapes were mastered by Bernie Grundman and feature sound quality never heard before.
