As a jazz musician, André Previn made more than 60 jazz recordings in the 1950s and 1960s, working with such greats as Shelly Manne, Dizzy Gillespie and Benny Goodman, but by the end of the 1960s he was primarily active as a conductor of symphonic works, leading the London Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, among others. At the time of this recording in 1989, he was in charge of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, having conducted a programme of Beethoven and Tchaikovsky two days earlier.
This first new jazz work after 27 years without jazz could have been a flop for Previn, so he brought in Joe Pass and Ray Brown, two exceptional musicians with whom he had already played, to back him up. The recording sessions took place at the Pasadena Ambassador Auditorium, and they had a wonderful warm-up session in the afternoon, but unfortunately the team had to leave because the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra had booked the hall at the same time. The actual recording session took place between 10:30 and 2:30 in the morning. Normal working hours for professional jazz musicians.
Perhaps it was the evening atmosphere that made the recording sound as relaxed as a nice jam session rather than a typical studio recording. The last track, One for Bunz, was recorded by accident and none of the musicians had any idea that the recording was going on, so the track just goes on and on. It just felt so right and the team in the recording room had to be reminded again and again not to tap their feet to the beat.

Ultra-HD 32-Bit-Mastering
This mastering format has been developed by FIM and Five/Four Productions. Five/Four Productions is made up of the former Telarc production team who wanted to be able to master the best possible sound quality regardless of the quality of the equipment. The Five/Four Productions team has won 16 Grammys and countless other awards.
It is re-digitised at 32-bit word length and sampling frequency to match the source material. Wherever possible, 192 KHz is used, but for some material, lower sampling rates can be beneficial to the sound.
Ultra-HD 32-bit productions can be played on any CD player with outstanding sound quality.
We recommend the use of „L’Art du Son” CD/DVD conditioner for even more sonic improvement.
